The city of Bainbridge, the county seat of Decatur County, was incorporated on December 22, 1829. Bainbridge was named for Commodore William Bainbridge, commander of the U.S. Constitution, “Old Ironsides”.

The historic Decatur County courthouse was constructed in 1902 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Seminole State Park, in Bainbridge, is located on the banks of Lake Seminole. This 37,500-acre lake attracts sport fishing, deer and duck hunting. The park is home to the gopher tortoise, the only native tortoise in Georgia. Other area attractions include Cheney Griffin Park and Willis Park.

The Riverside Artsfest, held annually during the first weekend of May, is the largest arts and crafts show in the city. Bainbridge also hosts the Swine Time Festival and the Decatur Fall Festival and Fair.
