Cairo, Georgia Population, Hospitals, Airports, and Schools

Cairo was incorporated as a town on October 28, 1870, and later designated the county seat for Grady County in 1905. It is believed Cairo was named for either the city in Egypt or the town of Cairo, Illinois. The city’s name, however, is pronounced “Cayroe”. This city has been regarded as Georgia’s center for the syrup trade.

Cairo is the birthplace of famous baseball player Jackie Robinson. He was the first African-American baseball player in the major leagues and was named the National League’s Most Valuable Player in 1949.

The city hosts the Great Southern Antique Car Rally held every May, which features 100 of the world’s most expensive antique cars. The Cairo Antique Auto Museum features antique cars from every decade of the 1900s, along with Matchbox cars, antique bicycles and other collectibles.

Cairo is the home a pickle processing industry and the site of a major producer of sugar cane syrup.

The U.S. Post Office in Cairo contains the New Deal mural titled “Products of Grady County” painted in 1938 by Paul Ludwig Gill.
