Jeffersonville, Georgia is a small town located in the center of Twiggs County. It has a population of 1,764 as of the 2020 census. The town is situated at the intersection of US Highway 80 and State Highway 96.

Geographically, Jeffersonville lies in the central part of Georgia and is surrounded by hills. The terrain is mostly flat with some rolling hills to the north and east of town. The climate in Jeffersonville can be described as humid subtropical, with hot summers and mild winters. Precipitation averages around 45 inches per year with snowfall being rare.

Jeffersonville has a rich history that dates back to its founding in 1812 when it was known as “Jeffersontown” after Thomas Jefferson. The town was officially incorporated as Jeffersonville in 1822 and became an important trading post for local farmers. During the Civil War, Jeffersonville was briefly occupied by Union forces before being re-taken by Confederate forces shortly afterwards.

Politics-wise, Jeffersonville is part of Georgia’s 11th Congressional District which is currently represented by Republican Barry Loudermilk in Congress. On the state level, it belongs to Senate District 20 which is represented by Republican John Wilkinson, Jr., while House District 140 is represented by Democrat Bill McGowan Sr..

The plantation house still stands today and has been designated as a historic site due to its significance during the Civil War era when it served as a field hospital for wounded soldiers from both sides during battles fought nearby.

Jeffersonville, the county seat of Twiggs County, was named for President Thomas Jefferson. Originally called Rain’s Store, Jeffersonville became a city in 1828.

The Twiggs County courthouse was built around 1903 and renovated in 1979. The courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was originally designed by J.W. Golucke, who designed a dozen or more courthouses in Georgia. The courthouse is currently undergoing an extensive restoration that will be completed in 2000.

Jeffersonville and Danville are the only two incorporated municipalities in the county. Previously, Marion was the county seat; however, the residents refused to allow the railroad to run through it and the town soon became deserted.

Jeffersonville is on U.S. Highway 80, at the geographic center of the state.

The city hosts the annual Deer Festival that is held at the beginning of deer hunting season. This event includes arts and crafts, entertainment, and carnival rides that are held in downtown Jeffersonville.
