Monticello, located in Jasper County, was incorporated in 1808 as the county seat and in 1810 as a town. Due to the large number of native Virginians who made the city their home, it is believed that Monticello was named for Thomas Jefferson’s home in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Monticello is home to the Forsyth Street Historic District with dogwood lined streets of Antebellum and Victorian homes and cottages.
The Neoclassical Revival county courthouse in Monticello was built in 1907 and was designed by T.F. Lockwood, Sr. The courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The city is the home of county music recording star, Trisha Yearwood.
Numerous annual festivals take place in Monticello, such as the Annual Deer Festival, held in November; the Annual Shady Dale Rodeo, held in June; and the Annual Piedmont Classic Horse Show, held in April.
