Powder Springs, Georgia Population, Hospitals, Airports, and Schools

This Cobb County municipality was originally called “Gunpowder Springs” and was incorporated as the town of “Springville at Powder Springs” December 29, 1838. The city was renamed Powder Springs on December 19, 1859.

The name originated from the seven springs in the city limits. The water in these springs contained several minerals and the spring water running over the sand turned it black like gunpowder, so the settlement was first named “Gunpowder Springs.”

Powder Springs Day is an annual celebration held on the fourth Saturday in September. The event, sponsored by the local Kiwanis Club, features a parade, road races, arts and crafts, special exhibits in the museum, and food. Also, the annual Independence Day Festival is held on the Fourth of July.

In the 1980s Powder Springs created their first city square behind a block of existing buildings, forming a unique gathering area for the citizens of Powder Springs.

The old Seaboard Airline Railway that ran through Powder Springs was abandoned in the 1980s. This railway was converted into a bicycle and walking trail in the 1980s named the Silver Comet Trail.
