Reidsville, the county seat of Tattnall County, was incorporated in 1838. The city was named for Robert E. Reid, a Superior Court Judge.

The Georgia State Penitentiary, the state’s central holding facility, is located just south of Reidsville. This is Georgia’s oldest state prison, and was constructed of marble in 1936. The prison is a large contributor to the city’s economy. The facility also houses a full-farming operation including diary, swine, agriculture, and cannery.

Gordonia-Alatamaha State, originally named Reidsville State Park, is located in Reidsville. The park was renamed for a small regional plant, Lost Gordonia, discovered in the 1770s. The park offers picnicking, swimming, fishing, boating, camping, a nine-hole golf course and tennis.

Reidsville converted the Alexander Hotel, listed on the National Registry, to its welcome center. This property built in 1892, is a wooden two-story structure with Victorian elements and has a pressed tin roof.
