Smyrna was incorporated into Cobb County on August 23, 1872. The original settlement was named Neal Dow, in honor of a friend of a railroad engineer. The city’s current name was taken from the seaport of Homer’s birthplace located in Asia Minor.

Smyrna was burned to the ground by Sherman on July 5, 1864 in the Battle of Smyrna.

The Arthur Bacon Golf Tournament is held annually in honor of the city’s former mayor.
