Vidalia, incorporated as a town in 1892, is the largest city in Toombs County. The creation of the city was due to the arrival of the Savannah, Americus, and Montgomery Railroad opening in Vidal. The daughter of the railroad president gave Vidal the name, which means “by way of the dahlias”.

Vidalia is famous for its sweet Vidalia onions, the state vegetable of Georgia. In fact, Vidalia is known as the “Sweet Onion Capital of the World”. The city of Vidalia celebrates the harvesting of their famous Vidalia Onions with the Vidalia Onion Festival, held every spring.

The city is home to the Altama Gallery, a museum of history and art, inside the restored Brazell House. Also, the Ladson Genealogical and Historical Library, containing over 30,000 books, is one of the largest genealogical research libraries in the Southeast.

The City of Vidalia is the home of Southeastern Technical Institute, a two-year college that is a member of the University System of Georgia.
