The area around Hackberry was originally settled by Native Americans, who were attracted to the abundant seafood and wildlife in the area. In 1755, French settlers established a trading post in what would become Hackberry. This trading post eventually became known as La Petite Anse Poste and it served as an important center for commerce between Native Americans and Europeans.
In 1855, Hackberry was officially incorporated as a village. During this time, Hackberry was home to many fishing camps that provided fresh seafood to local restaurants and markets. The town also had several sawmills which provided lumber for construction projects throughout Louisiana.
Today, Hackberry is still a small fishing village with plenty of charm and character.
