Gaithersburg, Maryland is located in Montgomery County, just 30 miles northwest of Washington, DC. It is a suburban city with a population of over 68,000. The geography of Gaithersburg consists of rolling hills and valleys and is situated along the Interstate 270 corridor. Its climate is typical for the mid-Atlantic region; it experiences all four seasons with hot summers and cold winters.

Gaithersburg was founded in 1765 by Benjamin Gaither as an agricultural community and over time grew to become an important industrial center. From the 1950s to the 1970s, many major corporations moved their headquarters to Gaithersburg, resulting in its current status as a diverse economic hub. The city currently has a thriving business community including technology companies, pharmaceutical companies, healthcare organizations, and more.

In terms of politics, the city is represented by the Democratic Party at both state and federal levels. In recent years, the city has seen increasing levels of civic engagement from its citizens on issues ranging from environmental conservation to civil rights.
