Mattapoisett, Massachusetts is a small coastal town with a population of around 5,000 people. It is located in southeastern Massachusetts and is part of the greater New Bedford area. Geographically, the town is located on the shores of Buzzards Bay and consists primarily of marshes, dunes and beaches. The climate in Mattapoisett is humid continental with warm summers and cold winters.
The history of Mattapoisett dates back to 1641 when it was first settled as part of Rochester. It was incorporated as a separate town in 1857. The town has a strong maritime tradition that continues to this day, with fishing and lobstering being two major industries in the area.
Politically, Mattapoisett is part of Plymouth County and has been represented by Republican Representative William M. Straus since 2005.
