El Reno, Oklahoma is a city located in Canadian County in the central part of the state. It is situated along Route 66, and is just 25 miles west of Oklahoma City. As of 2020, the population was estimated to be around 19,000 people.
El Reno was founded in 1889 as a railroad town by an agent of the Rock Island Railroad Company. The city’s name comes from the Spanish words for “The Reindeer”, which was inspired by a nearby creek named Reindeer Creek. El Reno quickly became an agricultural center and was known as “The Onion Capital of the World” due to its large production of onions in the early 20th century.
Today, El Reno is home to many attractions and businesses. There are several historical sites throughout town including Fort Reno, a military fort built during the Indian Wars; The Chisholm Trail Museum; and The National Route 66 Museum which showcases artifacts from America’s historic highway.
