Gallitzin is a small city located in the Allegheny Mountains of central Pennsylvania. The city has a humid continental climate, with cold winters and hot summers. The average temperature in the winter months is around 32 degrees Fahrenheit, and in the summer it can reach up to 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
The city was founded in 1832 by Father Demetrius Gallitzin, who was an early Catholic missionary to the area. He built a small chapel and named it St. Demetrius Church, which still stands today as one of Gallitzin’s most recognizable landmarks. In addition to its religious heritage, Gallitzin is known for its coal mining industry, which was once a major employer in the area. The city also has several factories that produce paper products and other goods for sale throughout Pennsylvania and beyond.
Politically, Gallitzin is part of Cambria County and has been represented by both Democrats and Republicans over the years. The current mayor of Gallitzin is Tom Martin, who was elected in 2017 on a platform of economic revitalization for the city.
