North Providence is a city located in Providence County, Rhode Island. It is bordered by the cities of Providence and Johnston to the south and Cranston to the west. The city has a total area of 8.9 square miles and is situated on Narragansett Bay. The climate in North Providence is typical of New England – summers are hot and humid while winters are cold with occasional snowfall.
The history of North Providence dates back to 1636 when Roger Williams founded the settlement of Providence Plantations, which later became Rhode Island. North Providence was incorporated as a town in 1765 and then as a city in 1902. In recent years, North Providence has become a popular destination for retirees due to its low cost of living and close proximity to major cities like Boston, New York City, Hartford, and Newport.
Politics in North Providence are mainly dominated by the Democratic party since most of its residents lean left politically. The current mayor is Charles A Lombardi who was elected in 2012.
