Richmond, Virginia is located in the Piedmont region of the state, east of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It has a humid subtropical climate with hot and humid summers and mild winters. The city’s history dates back to 1607, when it was founded by English colonists. It served as the capital of the Confederacy during the Civil War and today is home to numerous historical sites such as St. John’s Church and the Virginia State Capitol. Politically, Richmond is a largely Democratic-leaning city that voted for Joe Biden in 2020 with over 75% of the vote. The economy of Richmond is largely based on government, education, finance, health care, and tourism. There are several major universities in Richmond such as Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), University of Richmond (UR), and Virginia Union University (VUU). Additionally, there are several landmarks that can be found throughout Richmond such as Hollywood Cemetery where President James Monroe is buried, Monument Avenue which is lined with statues honoring Confederate leaders from the Civil War era, Maymont Park which offers outdoor activities such as gardens and walking trails, and Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden which features beautiful gardens filled with lush vegetation.
