The city is situated in the Arkansas Delta region and benefits from a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. The geography of Hazen is mainly flat, with some rolling hills in the northern part of the city.

The history of Hazen can be traced back to 1883 when it was founded as a railroad stop by the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway Company. In its early days, Hazen was an agricultural community that relied heavily on cotton production for economic stability. Over time, however, industry began to develop in Hazen, including a brick manufacturing plant and a furniture factory.

Today, Hazen remains primarily an agricultural community but also has some light industry and manufacturing businesses. The city is governed by Mayor Jerry Lard and five City Council members who are elected at large every two years. There are three public schools located within the city limits: Hazen Elementary School, which serves students in pre-kindergarten through sixth grade; Hazen High School; and Stuttgart High School.

Hazen also has several landmarks that attract visitors from all over Arkansas including Lake Austell Recreational Area which offers camping, fishing and swimming opportunities; The Cotton Museum which showcases artifacts related to the area’s cotton farming history; and the Drury-Dyer House which was built in 1885 and is now on the National Register of Historic Places.
