It is situated on the banks of the Missouri River and is surrounded by rolling hills and rich farmland. The area around Battle Creek was first settled in 1868 by homesteaders from Germany and Scandinavia. The town was officially founded in 1871 and named after an Indian battle fought nearby. In the early days, Battle Creek was an agricultural center with many small farms providing food for the region.
