Moving to Burgin, Kentucky
Burgin, Kentucky is a small city located in Mercer County. It is situated about 25 miles south of Lexington, the state capital. The population of the city is just under 1,000 people.
The city was founded in 1814 and was named after James Burgin, a local farmer and landowner who donated the land for the town’s development. The town quickly grew as a trading post and then as a railroad hub when the Louisville & Nashville Railroad arrived in 1872.
Today, Burgin retains much of its historic charm with its classic 19th century architecture and small-town atmosphere. Main Street serves as the commercial district for the city with many locally owned shops and restaurants that have been around for generations. There are also several historic sites throughout town including an old train depot that has been converted into a museum highlighting Burgin’s history and its involvement in the Civil War.
The city is surrounded by rolling hills and rural farmland dotted with horse farms and small family farms that produce corn, wheat, soybeans, hay, tobacco, beef cattle, sheep, hogs and chickens. Outdoor recreation opportunities abound in Burgin including fishing in Herrington Lake located just north of town or golfing at one of the nearby courses such as nearby Cedarhurst Golf Course or Bluegrass Country Club.
Burgin has several local events throughout the year including an annual summer festival which includes music on Main Street along with carnival rides and food booths. In addition to this there is an annual fall festival which includes live music performances from local bands as well as arts & crafts vendors selling handmade items from around Kentucky.
Overall, Burgin is a great place to live if you’re looking for small-town charm combined with easy access to larger cities like Lexington or Louisville for more urban amenities such as shopping malls or professional sports teams like UK basketball or NASCAR racing at Kentucky Speedway. The cost of living here is also very affordable compared to other parts of Kentucky so it’s great for those looking for an affordable place to call home while still enjoying all that Kentucky has to offer.
