Cairo, West Virginia is a small town located in the Eastern Panhandle region of the state. It is situated in Mineral County, just over 30 miles from Cumberland, Maryland. The town was founded in 1876 and originally called New Cairo. It was named after the city of Cairo, Egypt due to its location at the confluence of three rivers: the Potomac River, North Branch Potomac River, and Tonoloway Creek. The population of Cairo is currently around 1,000 people and it is known for its small-town charm and rural atmosphere.

The town has several historic buildings such as the Cairo House (built in 1873) which served as a hotel for many years, as well as several churches including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church (built in 1878) which still stands today. Other points of interest include the historic railroad depot which was built in 1880 and served as a stop on the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad line until 1962 when it closed due to lack of passengers.

Cairo is also home to two museums: The Mineral County Museum and The Mineral County Historical Society Museum both located on South Main Street which offer visitors an opportunity to learn about the history of this area.

The town hosts several annual events that residents enjoy attending such as their Fourth of July celebration which features fireworks shows, parades, food vendors and other activities that make this an enjoyable experience for all who attend. Additionally each October they hold their Apple Butter Festival where visitors can purchase homemade apple butter from local vendors and sample other homemade treats such as apple pies and cider doughnuts – all made with locally grown apples!

Cairo also offers plenty of outdoor activities for those looking to explore nature such as fishing at one of their two public fishing ponds or hiking along one of their many trails located nearby including New Creek Trail or the North Branch Trail System – both offer scenic views along with opportunities to observe wildlife up close!

In addition to its natural beauty Cairo also offers a variety of shopping options ranging from antique stores to gift shops or even a visit to one of their local wineries where you can sample some West Virginia wines while enjoying beautiful views of rolling hillsides!
