The city was founded in 1853 by pioneers who were drawn to the area for its natural beauty and abundant resources. They named it Canyonville after the canyon that runs through the area. It quickly became an important stop on the Oregon Trail as pioneers traveled through the region on their way to California and other points west. Canyonville is served by two main highways – Interstate 5 which runs north-south along the western edge of town; and Highway 227 which runs east-west along the southern edge of town connecting it with neighboring towns such as Winston to the east; Roseburg to the south; Myrtle Creek to the north; Sutherlin to the northwest; Reedsport to the southwest; Drain to the southeast; Elkton to the northeast; Glendale to north-northeast; Riddle to south-southwest;and Scottsburg further south-southwest The nearest major airport is located approximately 25 miles away in Eugene while smaller airports can be found at Roseburg (19 miles) and Myrtle Creek (14 miles).
