Hawaii, an isolated archipelago in the central Pacific, is the only U.S. state composed entirely of islands. It is divided into 5 counties: Honolulu, Maui, Kauai, Hawaii (commonly known as the Big Island), and Kalawao, one of the smallest counties in the U.S. Hawaii has 34 incorporated cities and towns, with Honolulu on the island of Oahu serving as both the state capital and largest city. Other notable cities include Hilo on the Big Island, Kahului on Maui, and Lihue on Kauai. Hawaii’s population is around 1.4 million people, making it the 40th most populous state, with the majority residing on Oahu. The state covers an area of approximately 10,931 square miles, including both land and water, making it the 43rd largest U.S. state by total area. Hawaii’s geography is diverse, featuring volcanic mountains, lush rainforests, and stunning coastlines. The state’s primary airport, Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) in Honolulu, is a major hub for trans-Pacific travel, while other significant airports include Kahului Airport (OGG) on Maui, Lihue Airport (LIH) on Kauai, and Hilo International Airport (ITO) on the Big Island. Hawaii is home to several higher education institutions, most notably the University of Hawaii system, which has campuses in Manoa (on Oahu), Hilo, and West Oahu, as well as seven community colleges. The system serves as the state’s leading provider of higher education. Hawaii Pacific University, a private institution, also has campuses in Honolulu. The healthcare infrastructure in Hawaii includes major hospitals such as The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu, the largest private hospital in the state, which is known for its comprehensive care and trauma services. Other key hospitals include Straub Medical Center, Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children, and Maui Memorial Medical Center. Hawaii’s healthcare system is adapted to serve its geographically dispersed population across the islands, ensuring access to medical services through a network of hospitals and clinics in both urban and rural areas.
