The village is situated in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains and is part of the Greater Olean Metropolitan Statistical Area. It has a population of approximately 1,500 people and covers an area of about 3 square miles. The village was originally established as part of a land grant by the Seneca Nation to William Cattaraugus in 1808.

The village was named after its founder, but it has also been known as Cataraugas, Catawaga, and Cataragas. The town was incorporated in 1837 and has grown steadily ever since. It is now home to several businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, automotive repair shops, and more.

The village has a rich history that dates back centuries before its official founding by William Cattaraugus.
