The town was founded in 1878 by Peter Cecil, a German settler who purchased land from a local Native American tribe. The town was initially called “Cecil Station,” and it served as a stop on the railroad line connecting Pittsburgh to Cleveland. By 1885, Cecil had its own post office, and several businesses opened up in town.
