Council Bluffs is located at 210km west of Des Moines. Near the Missouri River has long been an important site for westward migration in the U.S. Native Americans held powwows in the area, and in 1804 explorers Merriwether Lewis and William Clark met with representatives of two Native American tribes in the area. This “council” gave the city its name .Later, a large Mormon community settled in the area until most members of the religious group departed for Utah. About 48km up the river is the De Soto Bend National Wildlife Refuge, a stop for migrating ducks and geese.
