The history of Cowen dates back to the early 1800s when it was first established as a trading post for local Native American tribes. It quickly became a popular stopover for settlers heading westward and by 1835, it was officially incorporated as a town. In addition to being an important trading post, Cowen also served as an important stop on the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad line which ran through the town from 1872 until 1952.
