Dahlonega, Georgia Population, Hospitals, Airports, and Schools
The City of Dahlonega, pronounced “Dah-lahn-e-ga”, was originally incorporated as Talonega in 1833. The city, located in Lumpkin County, was a gold mining region and was the site of one of the first gold rushes in the 1820s. The gold had been discovered on Cherokee land in North Georgia, and the Native Americans were forced to leave their home and live on reservations.
The name “Dahlonega” is Cherokee for “golden color” or “yellow money”. The city still has places where visitors can recreationally pan for gold. The Dahlonega Gold Museum, the states oldest public building, is housed in the old Lumpkin County courthouse located in the center of Dahlonega’s town square, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The City of Dahlonega hosts several annual festivals, including the World Championship Gold Panning Competition, Wildflower Festival of the Arts, Family Day-Independence Day Celebration, and Gold Rush Days.
Dahlonega is home to North Georgia College and State University. This college is a co-educational, military, four-year unit of the University System of Georgia, with an estimated enrollment of more than 3,000 students.
Dahlonega participates in the Better Hometown Program run by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. This community development program is a public-private partnership intended to revitalize small communities with populations between 1,000 and 5,000. These cities have access to technical assistance and fiscal resources designed to stimulate downtown revitalization.
