The City of Dalton, established in 1847, is the county seat of Whitfield County. Dalton is nicknamed the “Carpet Capital of the World” because the city produces a large percentage of the world’s carpet.
Dalton is the gateway to the 150-mile Chieftain’s Trail which traces the path of the Cherokee Indian sites located in northwest Georgia. The city was also the starting point of the Native Americans’ “Trail of Tears”, when Andrew Jackson had the Cherokee Indians removed from this area.
