Danville, Kentucky is a city located in Boyle County, Kentucky. The city has a population of 16,347 according to the 2020 census. The city is situated between two rivers, the Dix and the Kentucky. The climate of Danville is humid subtropical with hot summers and mild winters.
The history of Danville dates back to 1783 when it was founded by Johnathan Crowell and William Walker. It was once an important center for trading and industry due to its location along the Dix River. In 1836, Danville became the county seat of Boyle County and in 1887 it was incorporated as a city.
Politically, Danville has been predominantly Republican since the 1950s. In recent years there have been some Democratic victories in local elections but Republicans continue to hold most offices in Boyle County.
Economically, Danville has traditionally relied on agriculture and manufacturing as its main sources of income. Recently there has been an increase in tourism due to its proximity to Lexington and Louisville which have helped boost the local economy. There are also several large employers in Danville such as Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center, American Greetings Corporation, Walmart Distribution Center, and Amazon Fulfillment Center which provide jobs for many residents of the area.
Danville is home to several schools including Centre College, one of the top liberal arts colleges in America; Georgetown College; Eastern Kentucky University; Transylvania University; Bluegrass Community & Technical College; and Somerset Community College all within close proximity to each other making it easy for students from all over Kentucky and neighboring states to attend college here.
