East Providence, Rhode Island is a city located in Providence County, Rhode Island. It is situated directly across the Seekonk River from the state capital of Providence. East Providence has a total area of 16.6 square miles and is located on Narragansett Bay. The city has a humid continental climate with hot and humid summers and cold, snowy winters.
The first settlers arrived in East Providence in 1636 and it was incorporated as a town in 1862. The city experienced significant industrial growth during the 19th century due to its location on Narragansett Bay, which was an important port for shipping goods to other parts of the country. This period also saw an influx of immigrants from Europe who helped to transform East Providence into an industrial center.
Today, East Providence is a diverse city with a vibrant economy that includes manufacturing, healthcare, education, retail, transportation and tourism industries. The city is home to many major employers including Brown University Medical Center, Lifespan Health System, Bank of America and Amica Insurance Company.
