Fordville is a small town located in northeastern North Dakota. It is situated along the banks of the Red River and is part of the Pembina County. The town was founded in 1883, when the first settlers arrived in search of a better life and to take advantage of the fertile soil found along the riverbanks.
The original name for Fordville was “Ford’s Crossing” due to its location at a river crossing point, but it was eventually changed to Fordville after its founder, Joseph Ford. As time passed more settlers began to arrive and by 1900, it had grown into a thriving community with churches, schools, businesses and even its own newspaper.
Today, Fordville has a population of about 500 people and is mostly an agricultural community with many farms dotting the landscape. It also serves as an important transportation hub for travelers heading north or east from Grand Forks or west from Winnipeg.
The town has several points of interest including the old Fordson School House which was built in 1902 and now serves as a museum dedicated to preserving local history; The old General Store which dates back to 1905; The Red River Valley Museum; An annual Fourth of July celebration complete with fireworks; And two churches: St Matthew’s Lutheran Church (built in 1909) and St Paul’s Catholic Church (built in 1913).
Fordville also hosts several events throughout the year such as their annual Harvest Festival which includes tractor pulls, carnival rides, live music, food vendors and more; A weekly Farmers Market where local farmers sell their homegrown produce directly to customers; And their annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony where residents gather around City Hall for caroling and hot chocolate.
