Franklinton is a small city located in Washington Parish, Louisiana. The city is situated on the Bogue Chitto River and is surrounded by the Bogue Chitto National Wildlife Refuge. It has a humid subtropical climate with mostly mild winters and hot summers. The average temperature in the summer months ranges from 70 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit.
Franklinton has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s when it was first settled by settlers from Virginia and North Carolina. It was incorporated as a town in 1822, becoming the first incorporated town in Washington Parish. During the Civil War, Franklinton served as an important supply center for Confederate forces in the area. After Reconstruction, many African-Americans moved to Franklinton, making it one of Louisiana’s most diverse cities during that period.
Today, Franklinton remains a small city with an estimated population of 4,400 people as of 2018.
