The city was originally founded in 1793 by General James Taylor and named after his son, Fort Mitchell. The area was originally settled by Native Americans who were later displaced by European settlers. The area was primarily agricultural until the 1950s when it began to develop as a bedroom community for Cincinnati commuters.
