The town was founded in 1883 and is named after the site of the famous Civil War battle in Pennsylvania. It has a population of just under 1,000 people and covers about 4 square miles.

The town has a rich history that began with its founding by William C. Lambert as an agricultural center for the area. In its early days, it was known for its grain mills and flour mills which supplied local farmers with their grains and flour products.
