It is situated on the banks of the Calcasieu River, which provides an abundance of recreational activities such as fishing, boating, and swimming for those that live in or visit Gilbert.
The town was established in 1883 by Captain John E. Gilbert who served as a Confederate soldier during the Civil War. He named the town after himself and it has remained a peaceful farming community since then. The town’s economy is largely based on agriculture with crops such as corn, soybeans, cotton, and rice being grown in the area.
