Gilbert, Louisiana is a small town located in Calcasieu Parish in the southwestern corner of the state. The population of Gilbert is just over 1,000 people and it is considered to be a very rural area. It is situated on the banks of the Calcasieu River, which provides an abundance of recreational activities such as fishing, boating, and swimming for those that live in or visit Gilbert.

The town was established in 1883 by Captain John E. Gilbert who served as a Confederate soldier during the Civil War. He named the town after himself and it has remained a peaceful farming community since then. The town’s economy is largely based on agriculture with crops such as corn, soybeans, cotton, and rice being grown in the area.

The town also has many historical buildings and attractions that are worth visiting while you are there. Some of these include the old Gilbert Bank Building which was built in 1895; the old Gilbert Post Office which operated from 1884 to 1907; and the old Gilbert Jailhouse which was built in 1906 and still stands today as a reminder of its past. There are also several churches located around town including St. Joseph Catholic Church, First Baptist Church, and St. Peter’s Episcopal Church all of which offer weekly services to their congregations.

In addition to its agricultural roots and historical sites there are several other attractions that make Gilbert an enjoyable place to visit or live: there are two public parks located within city limits – one at Lake Charles State Park where visitors can enjoy camping, picnicking, fishing, boating, swimming, hiking trails and more; plus two golf courses for those looking for a more leisurely activity during their stay; plus numerous restaurants offering traditional Cajun cuisine like gumbo and jambalaya – making it easy to find something delicious while you’re here!

Gilbert is also home to one of Louisiana’s oldest rodeos – The Calcasieu County Rodeo – held every year at Memorial Arena since 1942 where bull riders compete for cash prizes while spectators cheer them on from the sidelines! In addition to this event there are other festivals held throughout the year such as Mardi Gras parades in February/March; Fourth of July fireworks shows; Christmas parades; plus many more special events that bring people together throughout each season!
