The town is situated along the Chariton River and is about seven miles from the larger cities of Fayette and Boonville. The history of Glasgow dates back to 1820 when it was first settled by James Finley, who named it after his hometown in Scotland. In 1836, Glasgow was officially platted as a town and received its first post office the following year. It has remained relatively small throughout its history, but was briefly an important stop on the St. Louis-San Francisco railroad line during the late 19th century.

Glasgow’s politics are mainly moderate with no major partisan divides among its citizens.
