Hamilton, Georgia is a small city located in the northwest corner of the state. It is bordered to the north by the Chattahoochee River and to the west by Alabama. The area has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters.

The history of Hamilton dates back to 1828 when it was first founded as an Indian trading post. The city was officially incorporated in 1832, and became an important center for cotton production during the antebellum era. After the Civil War, Hamilton experienced a period of growth and development that saw it become one of Georgia’s leading industrial cities. In recent years, Hamilton has seen a resurgence in its economy through tourism and light manufacturing.

Politically, Hamilton is part of Harris County and governed by an elected mayor-council government system. The city is represented in both state and federal legislatures by elected officials from Harris County.

The city is home to several schools, including Hamilton High School, which serves grades 9-12; Hamilton Middle School; and four elementary schools: Westside Elementary School, Southside Elementary School, Eastside Elementary School, and Northside Elementary School.

There are several notable landmarks in Hamilton including Fort Tyler Historic Site; Hillabee Creek Park; Chattahoochee Valley Railroad Museum; Harris County Courthouse; Harris County Historical Society Museum; Stegall-Staley House Museum; Silver Lake Park; and Historic Downtown Square.

Hamilton is the county seat of Harris County and was incorporated December 20, 1828. The city is believed to be named for James Hamilton, Jr., a governor of South Carolina. Mr. Hamilton is known for passing the Nullification Ordinance of 1832 and for leading the armed forces to defend states’ rights.

Hamilton is the site of the Harris County Cattleman’s Rodeo in September. In April 1969, the city opened its town square as a museum of the 1870-1920 era and now the square is called “Hamilton on the Square”.

The city, during the late 19th century, was the home of B.F. White, who was important in the development of Sacred Heart singing. This form of music is a traditional form of Christian congregational music in which the human voice provides the only source of instrumentation.
