The history of Jamestown dates back to 1854 when it was founded by James Renfro and his family, who were among the first settlers in Marshall County. The town was originally called “Jamestown” after Mr. Renfro’s first name. It was incorporated as a city in 1887 and later became an important stop along the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad line.

Politically, Jamestown is part of Marshall County which leans heavily Republican in elections.
