Moving to Kennesaw, Georgia

This Cobb County town was originally known as “Big Shanty”, but was incorporated September 21, 1887 as “Kennesaw” to associate it with the Civil War battle fought nearby.

On June 27, 1864, a famous Civil War battle was fought nearby at Kennesaw Mountain, which was named by local Native Americans. Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, covering over 3,000 acres, is located to the south of the town.

The town made headlines because of the ordinance in 1982 requiring each head of household to own gun and the ammunition for it as well.

Kennesaw State University, founded in 1963, is a liberal arts school and a member of the University System of Georgia. This institute of higher learning attained university status in 1996.
