Las Vegas, New Mexico is a small city located in the northern part of the state. The city was founded in 1835 and is the county seat of San Miguel County. It has a population of around 14,000 people and is known for its historic downtown area, which retains much of its 19th century charm.

Las Vegas is situated at an elevation of 6,500 feet in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The area’s mild weather, with warm days and cool nights, makes it an ideal spot for outdoor activities like hiking, biking, camping and fishing. Las Vegas also offers plenty of cultural attractions such as museums, galleries and theaters.

The city has a rich history that dates back to its founding as a Spanish settlement in 1835. It quickly became an important trading center on the Santa Fe Trail connecting New Mexico to Missouri. During this period Las Vegas was known as “the City of Lights” because it was one of the first cities in New Mexico to have electric street lights installed. In 1879 Las Vegas was officially incorporated as a city and quickly became a major stop on the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe Railway line from Kansas City to Los Angeles.

Las Vegas retains much of its historic charm with many old buildings still standing from its heyday including several adobe structures dating back to Spanish colonial times. One example is Plaza Hotel which was built in 1881 and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places along with other notable landmarks like Storrie Lake State Park and Fort Union National Monument located just outside town.

Las Vegas has plenty to offer visitors including numerous restaurants offering local cuisine such as chile rellenos or carne adovada (pork marinated in red chile sauce). There are also several wineries nearby producing award-winning wines from locally grown grapes including Luna Rossa Winery located just outside town which offers tastings daily from 11am – 5pm (summer hours).

In addition to all this natural beauty Las Vegas hosts many festivals throughout the year celebrating everything from music to art and culture such as Artfest every May or Fiestas de las Luminarias during December which features traditional Mexican decorations made out of paper lanterns called luminarias that light up downtown streets creating a beautiful atmosphere for holiday shopping or simply strolling around town admiring all there is to see here in Las Vegas New Mexico.
