Moving to Macon, Georgia
Macon, incorporated in 1823, is the county seat of Bibb County. The city is named in honor of Senator Nathaniel Macon of North Carolina.
Macon’s City Hall served as the temporary state capitol, under the Confederacy, from November 1864 to March 1865. The Bibb County courthouse was constructed in 1924 and remodeled in 1940. The courthouse is listed within the National Register of Historic Places.
Macon’s storied tradition that began thousands of years ago has been traced back and represented by their monuments. Macon has more listings on the National Register of Historic Places than any other city in Georgia. The city auditorium has the largest covered copper dome in the world and the Hay House, built in the 1850s, is a historic museum.
The design of Macon’s city structure came from the ancient city of Babylon. It was designed to contain multiple parks and large roads. At one point, the city required its citizens to plant shade trees in their front yards.
The Georgia Music Hall of Fame and the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame are located in Macon.
A number of famous musicians are from Macon including rock and roll artist Little Richard, the rock group The Allman Brothers, and soulful singer Randy Crawford.
Annually, Macon hosts the Georgia International Cherry Blossom Festival. This event showcases concerts, tours, shows, arts and crafts and a number of blossoms of the flowering Yoshino cherry trees.
Macon is home to Wesleyan College, founded in 1836 as the Georgia Female College, the first college in the world chartered to grant degrees to women. Other schools located in the city include Macon State College, Central Georgia Technical College, and Mercer University.
