Meeteetse is located in the northwest corner of Wyoming, about 45 miles from the Montana border. The city lies at an elevation of 5,000 feet and is surrounded by mountains and hills. The climate in Meeteetse is semi-arid with hot summers and cold winters. It receives about 13 inches of precipitation each year.
Meeteetse was founded in 1886 after gold was discovered nearby. It grew quickly due to its location near the Big Horn River, which provided a reliable water source for farming and ranching activities. The town became known as a center for ranching, sheepherding, and logging activities which continue to this day. In recent years tourism has become an important part of the local economy as well due to the area’s natural beauty and recreational opportunities such as hiking, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, and skiing.
The town is governed by a mayor-council system with elections held every four years. The local schools are part of the Park County School District #1 which serves students from kindergarten through grade 12 at three different campuses located within Meeteetse city limits.
Meeteetse’s main landmark is the historic Meeteetse Hotel which was built in 1883 when gold was first discovered in the area. It is one of only two remaining 19th century log hotels still standing in Wyoming today and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Another popular tourist attraction is the Meeteetse Museum which features artifacts from local ranches as well as Native American artifacts from nearby archaeological sites. Additionally, Meeteetse offers numerous outdoor recreation opportunities such as camping at Greybull Lake State Park or visiting several nearby wild horse preserves located on Bureau of Land Management land near town.
