Moving to Metter, Georgia

Metter, the county seat of Candler County, was originally incorporated in Bulloch County on August 17, 1903. Later the county boundaries were redrawn and Metter became part of Candler County.

Metter’s beginning, like many other small cities in Georgia, relates to the railroad. The city was established solely as a stop on the railroad. Supposedly, the City of Metter was named by a railroad official for his wife because he “met her” in Metter.

There are two places listed on the National Register of Historic Places: The Candler County courthouse, built in 1921, and the South Metter Residential Historic District, comprised of numerous late 19th and early 20th century homes. Old Lake Church in Metter, built in 1839, is one of the oldest Primitive Baptist Churches in existence.

Metter was the birthplace of religious broadcaster Michael A. Guido. The Guido Evangelical Association is familiar to radio and television audiences worldwide for its “seeds from the sower” programs.

Metter participates in the Better Hometown Program run by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. This community development program is a public-private partnership intended to revitalize small communities with populations between 1,000 and 5,000. These cities have access to technical assistance and fiscal resources designed to stimulate downtown revitalization.
