The city was founded in 1836 by John Middletown, who named it after himself. In 1851, Middletown was incorporated as a town with approximately 500 residents; today, it has nearly 4,000 people living within its limits. Politically, Middletown follows the same laws and regulations as any other city in Indiana; however, due to its small size it does not have its own mayor or council members but relies on representatives from surrounding townships to make decisions that affect the entire county.
