Milledgeville, Georgia Population, Hospitals, Airports, and Schools

Milledgeville is the county seat of Baldwin County and the only municipality in the county. The city was incorporated and became one of the state’s earlier capitals on December 12, 1804. The city was home to the state offices until 1867, when they were moved to Atlanta. The city was named for Governor John Milledge, who donated land to the University of Georgia.

In 1803, the city was laid out and designated as the state capital in 1804. Milledgeville holds the distinction of being the only city ever designed for the purpose of being a state capital. The original Governor’s Mansion was constructed in Milledgeville and is currently a tourist attraction. The mansion is part of a tour that includes the entire historic district of Milledgeville.

The old Baldwin County courthouse, located in Milledgeville, is listed within the National Register of Historic Places. This neoclassical courthouse was constructed in 1887 and remodeled in 1937 and 1965. A new courthouse was built in 1997, located directly across the street from the old structure. Georgia College & State University recently purchased the old courthouse with plans for it to be retrofitted and renovated.

Milledgeville is home to Georgia College & State University (GC&SU) and Georgia Military College, both of which are state supported institutions. GC&SU is the State’s designated liberal arts university, with additional campuses in Macon and Warner Robins. The Georgia Military College is a two-year, multi-site college and high school/middle school. Administrative offices are housed in the Old State Capitol building.
