Monroeville was founded in 1836 by settlers from Pennsylvania and Ohio who were seeking religious freedom. In its early days, Monroeville was a small but prosperous farming community with a variety of businesses, such as blacksmith shops, flour mills, and sawmills. The town also had two newspapers at one point – the Monroeville Herald and the Monroeville Times – which were both published until they merged into a single paper in 1881.
