Oglethorpe, the county seat of Macon County, was incorporated on December 14, 1849. The city is named for General James Oglethorpe, the founder of Georgia.
Macon County’s courthouse, built in 1894, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. An older courthouse built in the 1850’s is still standing and was the scene of the 1871 murder trial of Colonel Fish.
Oglethorpe is located on the Flint River and in the 1840’s was the largest and most active town in the southwest until decimated by smallpox and malaria epidemics in the 1850’s and again in the 1860’s. Many houses were moved twenty miles south to Americus or burned during these epidemics.
Oglethorpe participates in the Better Hometown Program run by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. This community development program is a public-private partnership intended to revitalize small communities with populations between 1,000 and 5,000. These cities have access to technical assistance and fiscal resources designed to stimulate downtown revitalization.
The Olde Days Festival and the Parade of Flags are held in downton Oglethorpe.
