Moving to Parmelee, South Dakota
Parmelee, South Dakota is an unincorporated community located in the southeastern corner of the state. It is situated in Shannon County, near the Rosebud Indian Reservation and the Nebraska border. The town is home to about 200 people, most of whom are members of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe.
Parmelee was established in 1913 as a trading post for farmers and ranchers from the surrounding area. The town has a rich history that is still alive today. In addition to its original purpose as a trading post, Parmelee also served as a stop on the railroad line that ran between Valentine, Nebraska and Pierre, South Dakota. This line was used to transport goods and services to local towns during the early 20th century.
Parmelee has always been an important part of the local economy, providing jobs for members of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe such as ranch hands and cowboys who worked on cattle drives from other parts of South Dakota into Nebraska. Today, Parmelee’s economy relies mainly on tourism and agriculture; there are several ranches in the area where visitors can stay overnight or go horseback riding.
The town’s main attraction is its historic downtown area which features several buildings dating back to its founding in 1913; these include a general store, bank building, post office, jailhouse, barber shop and more. Visitors can also take part in activities such as fishing at nearby lakes or hunting at nearby game preserves. There are also plenty of outdoor recreation opportunities available including camping and hiking trails nearby at Wounded Knee Creek National Historic Site or Badlands National Park which are both less than an hour away from Parmelee by car.
Parmelee has maintained its small-town charm throughout its history despite being located close to larger cities like Rapid City and Pierre; it still offers many amenities that larger towns cannot provide such as friendly locals who will welcome you with open arms no matter where you come from or what your background is. People who visit Parmelee often comment on how peaceful it feels here compared to other places they have visited; this could be due to its remote location surrounded by nature or simply because it’s such a tight-knit community with strong family values that have been passed down through generations since its founding over 100 years ago.
