Roma is located in the Rio Grande Valley in Southern Texas, just north of the US-Mexico border. It has a semi-tropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. The city was founded in 1765 by the Spanish, and today is home to a population of about 11,000 people. Politically, Roma falls within Starr County and is represented by State Representative Rene Oliveira.

The economy of Roma is largely based on agriculture due to its location near the Rio Grande Valley. The population has grown steadily since then with an estimated population of 10,948 in 2018. Most of the population is Hispanic or Latino with 89.3% of the people identifying as such.
