Sandersville, incorporated as a town on November 27, 1812, is the county seat of Washington County. The city recently celebrated its two hundred-year anniversary. The city’s original name was “Saundersville”, named for Mr. M. Saunders a local storeowner. The city dates back to 1796 when it was an intersection of Indian trails and later the site of Saunder’s general store.

Sandersville is nicknamed “The Kaolin City” or “Kaolin Capital of the World”. Kaolin is fine white clay used in hundreds of products ranging from paper to cosmetics to the nose cone of rockets.

There are a number of annual events held in Sandersville including the Kaolin Festival and the Fall Festival.

Sandersville Regional Technical Institute, located in Sandersville, is a two-year unit of Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education.
