Sanibel, Florida Population, Hospitals, Airports, and Schools

Sanibel Island is located at 175 km south of Tampa. It is 35km long and some 3km wide. It’s pretty and lush, although recent condo and hotel construction has changed the pristine, undeveloped character it used to have. Most of Sanibel’s mangrove swamp shoreline along San Carlos Bay is protected within the 6,350-acre J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge. Darling was a conservation-minded cartoonist who helped to establish the nation’s wildlife refuge system. Exhibits in the refuge’s visitor center include a re-creation of his art studio, a display honoring him and other “heroes of conservation,” and a bird-observation room overlooking outdoor feeding stations that attract many birds.
